"For our industry, with this many components and projects, a tool like this is almost necessary. It helps us a lot."
Justin Cox,
Commodity Manager - Active & Passive Components,
at Swoboda
Swoboda develops highly complex metal-plastic components, sensors, actuators, and specialised electronics (ECUs) and (sub-)systems. As a capable engineering partner to its international customers, Swoboda cannot afford component risks. When major automotive customers made systematic risk management a contract requirement last year, the direction was clear at Swoboda: electronics procurement needed to move from reactive to strategic.
"When customers hear that we work with Luminovo, the response is positive. That puts us in a stronger position right away."

Starting point: A proven workflow meets new realities
Swoboda's procurement process had grown into a model of efficiency over the years. Development researched components manually, documented requirements in Excel spreadsheets, and purchasing then negotiated with the manufacturers. A workflow that served the company well for years. But as the electronics market grew more volatile, more time went into research and coordination and less into strategic work.
The market did not wait, either. Last year, one of the larger OEM customers explicitly asked for systematic risk management, part of a trend that is picking up across the automotive supply industry. What individual customers request today will be industry standard tomorrow. For the purchasing team, the position was clear: stay a step ahead of customer requirements rather than chase them.
Setting the direction: Extend what works
At the time, Swoboda was already using Luminovo's Procurement Intelligence solution for component search and alternatives analysis. With it, the team compares parts and specifications in minutes rather than hours of manual research, and finds alternatives that fit technically and make more sense commercially. When risk management became a priority, the path was clear: instead of maintaining two tools in parallel, the existing platform would be extended with the new Silicon Expert integration.
That achieved two strategic goals at once. Internally, purchasing and development gained a shared data foundation. Externally, Swoboda could meet the specific customer requirements for systematic risk management. Exactly the argument that makes the difference in sales conversations today.
"That sounded right. And if we can keep working with Luminovo, it's a natural fit."

How things run today: One click instead of a full working day
The change starts with access. Today, development and purchasing work on the same platform with the same data. When a developer names a manufacturer part number, purchasing can check in seconds how the part compares to alternatives. Prices, availability, and lifecycle status are visible in a few clicks.
In series production, the platform becomes an early warning system. EOL indicators flag when a component is approaching the end of its lifecycle. The team can evaluate alternatives and design them in proactively. That saves time and cost, because redesigns under pressure and expensive last-time buys are needed less often.
The biggest operational shift shows when a customer asks about exposure to a supplier crisis. In the past, that meant assembling Excel overviews, asking manufacturers about production locations, and collecting proof documents from different sources. Today, Swoboda checks exposure directly in Luminovo, including the proof documents that customers ask for afterwards. What used to take a full working day is now cut in half, at minimum.
"Roughly estimated: half the time. At minimum."

Before and after
Aspect | Before | With Luminovo |
|---|---|---|
Component search | Manual research and comparison in Excel | Alternatives and specifications directly comparable |
Purchasing-development collaboration | Sequential coordination via Excel and requirements documents | Both teams on one platform with the same data |
Alternatives search in series production | Ad hoc research when needed | Continuous monitoring of cost and availability |
Lifecycle management (EOL) | Manual observation | Proactive warning function in the platform |
Customer inquiries during supplier crises | Excel overviews assembled manually, manufacturers queried for production locations | Exposure check in a few clicks, proof documents linked directly |
Risk analysis effort | Up to a full working day in complex cases | Half a working day (around 50 percent time savings) |
Impact on three fronts: Internally, with customers, with suppliers
Internally, Swoboda wins back time above all. Risk analyses for customer inquiries take around half as long, and in complex cases entire working days are cut in half. In parallel, structural cost advantages appear in the design phase, because alternatives are visible earlier and cost-optimised parts are in the running from the start. Justin Cox describes immense cost savings in current projects.
With customers, the payoff runs on two levels. OEMs expect solid answers when a supplier crisis hits or a component gets discontinued. Swoboda responds within the same conversation round, instead of researching for days. For OEMs who run systematic risk management themselves, working with Luminovo is also a signal: Swoboda operates as a peer.
"When we mention to customers that we work with Luminovo, the feedback we get is often: nice that you're already actively using this kind of solution."
- Justin Cox, Commodity Manager – Active & Passive Components, Swoboda
With suppliers, planning certainty grows. Because Swoboda identifies risks early and coordinates with partners proactively, escalations and short-term bottlenecks become easier to avoid. Supplying additional data to Swoboda takes effort, but the response has been positive across the board. It helps both sides keep the shared goal in view: a supply chain that works.
Looking ahead: From customer request to industry standard
Swoboda expects systematic risk management to become the industry standard over the next few years. With Luminovo and Silicon Expert, the team is already set up where other suppliers still have to catch up. Looking further ahead, data-driven alternatives search and risk assessment will come into play at even more points across the product lifecycle.
"For our industry, with this many components and projects, a tool like this is almost necessary. It helps us a lot."
